In certain cases, options such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), Active Surveillance or Thyroid Artery Embolisation may avoid the need for surgery and avoid the need for extended time off work or thyroid hormone replacement in the future. Our clinic is designed from the ground up to help you navigate these treatment options and decide on which is appropriate and best suited to your circumstances.
Thyroid nodule ablation is relatively new to Australia but has been well established overseas for some time. There are evidence based guidelines for case selection and the procedure is endorsed by leading international thyroid associations.
Radiofrequency ablation is performed in rooms under local anaesthetic much like a dental procedure. Most patients require minimal downtime after the procedure. Before we can offer it, we need to get to know the characteristics of your nodule and your circumstances so we can determine whether it is appropriate.
Advanced ultrasound and modern Radiofrequency technology allows us to precisely target the ablation procedure where it is needed using a fine needle probe (similar to the size used for blood tests). We treat only the nodule causing trouble and we aim to preserve the surrounding normal thyroid tissue so that it can keep functioning normally and maintain your thyroid hormone levels.

At TNAQ we aim to provide a holistic service which helps patients navigate the information overload and help them make informed decisions regarding their treatment.
Matching the right treatment option for each patient requires expertise across all treatment options and time to get to know each individual patient (and their nodule) in detail.
We do our own ultrasound, biopsies and procedures in our own purpose built suite. This helps us standardise and control quality.
We collaborate extensively with our colleagues and we aim to give unbiased and ethical treatment guidance which is evidence based and consensus driven. We do not recommend unneccesary tests.
For patients outside of Brisbane, we aim to help minimise your need for travel and work with local providers and through telehealth to give you the best balance of quality care and convenience.
Ablation is not suitable for everyone and where we think it is not suited we will provide guidance on what other treatment approaches are appropriate (eg. imaging surveillance or surgery). Our goal is to help you make an informed choice about how you want your thyroid nodules treated and also determine which options are best over the course of your lifetime.
Our clinicians, Dr Eviston and Dr Wilkinson are both highly experienced endocrine surgeons who have treated thousands of patients with thyroid nodules. They are Australian trained thyroid clinicians with international experience.
A bit about us…
TNAQ is a collaborative service run by Dr Tim Eviston and Dr David Wilkinson. Interventional cases are frequently performed together using a team approach which is foundational to the clinic. It is likely you will get to know both of us during the course of your care.
Tim is an experienced cancer surgeon with a broad skillset. After completing General Surgery training and PhD in Sydney, Tim went on to complete multiple years of advanced training in Endocrine, Head & Neck and Reconstructive surgery at leading hospitals in Australia and Canada. Tim is passionate about personalising and improving treatment. After developing advanced ultrasound skills during his training, Tim used this experience as a foundation for learning RFA in both North America and Asia with the mentorship of experts in the field. Tim is an active member of multiple specialist societies and associations including ANZHNCS, GSA, AHNS, and IHNUSA.
David is one of Queensland’s leading thyroid specialists and a published author with a passion for personalised and holistic care. He worked for decades as a senior consultant surgeon at Princess Alexandra hospital and in private practice where he treated thousands of patients with thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. In recent years, David has evolved his practice to offer treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation while drawing on his immense expertise and knowledge to help guide decision making.
